The principle "Think global, act local" is not a romantic phrase for us, but active nature conservation and a rejection of global transport madness.
Systemic Resilience instead of Overseas Mass Production
In an uncertain era marked by geopolitical tensions and fragile supply chains, resorting to cheap overseas mass-produced goods is no longer merely an economic argument. When cargo ships navigate around crisis areas for weeks and paralyze industries, the vulnerability of a system solely focused on maximum margins becomes evident. Every time a production facility in Europe closes, irreplaceable artisanal know-how is lost forever. At Speck Gear, we deliberately counter this trend and focus on systemic resilience. We handcraft our bags and racks directly in Switzerland, specifically in the greater Zurich area. This conscious decision to forego supposedly cheaper production abroad is also an essential contribution to maintaining our economic base. Our entire economy and prosperity are fundamentally based on healthy small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). If we deny these businesses their right to exist because only the lowest price matters, the foundation crumbles. Particularly in Switzerland and Europe, a look at history shows how painful this loss is: we were world leaders in the textile industry and textile machine construction. But within a few decades, immense know-how built up over generations has almost completely migrated to other countries. Every time knowledge is lost, a piece of independence is given up. By deliberately maintaining manual production here at Speck Gear and working with European partners, we refuse to simply accept this trend. We actively invest in preserving specialized jobs and ensure that textile processing craftsmanship stays where it belongs: in our own regions.
The 100% Approach: Woven in France, sewn in Switzerland
For us, however, sustainability also means minimizing the CO₂ footprint of your adventure even before the first pedal stroke. It's an ecological illusion to believe a product is green just because it has a corresponding label, even though it has circled the globe three times before sale. That's why 99% of our materials come directly from Europe. Our radically transparent approach is particularly evident in our pack sacks. While the market is flooded with Asian mass-produced goods, we take a more conscious path: The ultralight, tear-resistant fabric for the Speck Gear Pack System is exclusively woven in France. The Bio-Based Dyneema® cord is manufactured in Germany, and the mini-toggle comes from Italy. This is the basis for a setup that does without environmentally harmful PFAS 'forever chemicals'. If you're out in heavy rain or washing your clothes, no toxic substances get into the forest floor or rivers. The final, high-quality finishing with a felled seam is done in Switzerland – that's our definition of short, clean supply chains.
